Maintaining a Clean Work Area

For many their garage is the place they use for home improvement projects or their hobbies. This is a great way to keep any mess contained to another area. But if you use this space and do not clean up after, over time this space can become cluttered and filled with debris. You can enjoy the benefits of having your own private place for working if you learn a few tips on maintaining your work area.

Go over the walls and shelving with bleach and water to sterilize the area. Bleach kills everything and this will give you a fresh start in your garage. It is always good to use sanitizing cleansers at least once a month. This will keep your area thoroughly clean and remove any contaminants.

Shelving - If you already have shelving then you may just want to add some additional pieces, if you don't then place shelving on one wall. This will allow you to truly organize your space and keep things off the floor.

Peg or Boards with clips for the garden tools - having a place to hang your tools not only provides easy access to them when they are needed, but it also frees up vital space in your garage.

Tools - A tool chest or tool box should be something contained in every garage. It gives a home for your tools and keeps them off the floor and out of reach of children.

Empty out the garage. Remove everything from the garage and use your shop vacuum to pick up any wood chips, nails and other items that have been collecting over the years. Shop vacuums are great as they are capable of picking up these items. They are designed to withstand heavy use such as in a garage atmosphere, whereas you would damage your regular vacuum.

The importance of maintaining a clean work area cannot be stressed enough. Safety cannot be guaranteed if you have items scattered around the work space. Having a home for all of your tools allows you to put them away when done working on a project or hobby. Once you are done for the day simply put your tools back in their designated areas and take out the shop vacuum to clean up the space. This will allow you to use your area whenever you need to without the frustration of locating items and an unsightly mess.
